Tire Care Tips: Proper Tire Repair & Storage

Tires need care to deliver the ride they were built for. This section covers the two areas most drivers get wrong: what damage can actually be repaired versus what requires replacement, and how to store a seasonal set so it is still good next season. Both matter more in Canada than most places, because almost every driver here runs two sets and half the year they are sitting in a garage.
TIRE STORAGE

Store tires indoors in a clean, cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and anything that generates ozone such as electric motors, generators, and furnaces. Clean each tire before storing and note which position it came from. In Canada this matters twice a year for most drivers, and getting it wrong can cost you a set of winter tires that looked fine when you put them away.

TIRE REPAIR

Repairing a damaged tire is certainly less expensive and less hassle than buying a brand new one. But repairing a tire isn’t always an option. If your tire becomes damaged, it may be repaired if it meets the following criteria:
1. The tire has not been driven on when flat
2. The damage is only on the tread section of your tire (sidewall damage ruins a tire immediately) and/or
3. The puncture is less than 6mm (¼")
